General CT Scan Procedure – Step-by-Step

1. You’ll be welcomed at our reception and asked about your medical history.
    Our team will explain the procedure in simple terms and answer your questions.
2.  You’ll change into a hospital gown (if needed).
    All jewellery, glasses, belts, or metal objects must be removed.
3. You will lie down on a flat motorised table that moves into the CT scanner — a large, ring-shaped machine.
   We’ll position you correctly based on the area being scanned (head, chest, abdomen, etc.)
4. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly during certain parts of the scan to ensure clear images.
   Our staff will communicate through a speaker system.
5. The machine rotates around the body, taking X-ray images from multiple angles.
   The table may move slightly during the process.
6. The entire scan typically takes 5 to 15 minutes depending on the study type.

CT Scan WITHOUT Contrast (Plain CT)

Used for: Bone injuries, head trauma, kidney stones, lung screening, spinal assessment, and more.

What happens:
No injections or oral contrast involved.
You’ll lie on the table; the scan is quick and completely painless.
You can resume normal activities right after the scan.

No special preparation is typically required unless otherwise advised by your doctor.

CT Scan WITH Contrast (e.g., CECT, Angiogram, Venogram)

Used for: Tumours, infections, blood vessels, internal bleeding, bowel issues, etc.

What happens:

1. Contrast Administration:
   A contrast dye (iodine-based) is given orally, intravenously (IV), or both.
   The IV may be placed in your arm for injection during the scan.
2. Sensation During Injection:
   You may feel a warm sensation, metallic taste, or slight nausea — this is normal and temporary.
3. Monitoring:
   You’ll be closely monitored during and after the contrast is administered to check for any reactions.
4. Image Capture:
   The contrast enhances visibility of blood vessels, organs, and soft tissues — improving diagnostic accuracy.

Important Notes Before a Contrast Scan:

Fasting: You may be asked not to eat for 4–6 hours before the scan.
Hydration: Drinking water before and after helps flush the contrast from your system.
Kidney Function: A blood test may be needed to check kidney health if you have underlying conditions.
Allergies: Inform us if you’re allergic to iodine or have had contrast reactions before.

 After the Scan

• If contrast was used, we recommend drinking plenty of fluids to help your body eliminate the dye.
• Most patients can go home immediately and return to normal activities unless advised otherwise.
• Your scan report will be prepared by our radiologist and shared within 24 hours (or sooner for urgent cases).
