Early Growth Scan

The early growth scan, performed between 28-32 weeks of pregnancy, is an essential ultrasound that assesses your baby’s growth and overall well-being. At this stage, the scan provides crucial information to ensure that your baby is growing appropriately within the womb.

Why Early Growth Scan done ?

Fetal Growth Measurement: The scan measures key parameters such as the baby’s head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), and femur length (FL). These measurements help determine the baby’s estimated weight and growth percentile.
Amniotic Fluid Assessment: The volume of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby is checked to ensure it is within the normal range, as this fluid is vital for the baby’s movement and lung development.
Placental Function: The scan also evaluates the placenta’s position and function, ensuring it is providing adequate nutrients and oxygen to the baby. If the placenta is not functioning optimally, it could affect the baby’s growth.
Fetal Position: The scan helps identify the baby’s position within the womb, such as head-down (cephalic) or breech (bottom-first), which can impact the birth plan.

Late Growth Scan

The late growth scan, conducted between 35-38 weeks of pregnancy, offers a final check on your baby’s growth and readiness for birth.

Why Late Growth Scan ?

Fetal Size and Weight: Similar to the early growth scan, this ultrasound measures the baby’s size and weight, ensuring the baby is growing steadily. It also helps detect conditions like macrosomia (larger than average baby) or intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).
Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI): The amount of amniotic fluid is reassessed to ensure the baby is in a healthy environment and to rule out conditions like oligohydramnios (low fluid levels) or polyhydramnios (excess fluid).
Placental Health and Position: The placenta’s condition and location are rechecked, particularly to confirm it has not moved into a position that could obstruct delivery.
Fetal Position: The baby’s position is again evaluated, which is important as the delivery approaches. The scan helps determine if the baby is in a position favorable for a vaginal birth or if other delivery methods should be considered.
Doppler Studies: In some cases, Doppler ultrasound may be used to assess blood flow in the umbilical artery, uterine arteries, and other vessels to ensure that the baby is receiving enough oxygen and nutrients.
