A Hip scan, also known as a hip ultrasound, is performed to evaluate the hips for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in infants.
What is a Hip Scan?
A hip scan is an ultrasound of an infant’s hips. It helps doctors check for a condition called developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH).
How is it done?
For the scan, your little one will lie comfortably on their back. The doctor will gently move a handheld device called a transducer over their hip joints. This sends sound waves that create real-time pictures of the hips. It only takes 5-10 minutes. The scan might take more or less time depending on what is found.
Who needs a Hip Scan?
Babies at higher risk for DDH may need a hip scan as a precaution. Risk factors include things like a family history, being breech in the womb, or abnormal findings during a physical exam. The scan helps the doctor determine if the hips are developing properly.
Preparing for the Hip Scan
No special preparations are required. Simply dress your child in comfortable clothing that allows easy access to their hips.
What Happens During
The radiologist will apply some cool gel to your baby’s hips, then use a wand-like device to capture images of the hip joints. The process is quick and completely painless for your little one!
Afterwards
You’re free to leave immediately after the procedure. Your baby can resume playing as usual, and the gel wipes off easily.
Report Time:
The hard copy reports will be ready for pickup within 10-15 minutes after the scanning process has finished.

A hip scan is an ultrasound test used to check how well a baby’s hip joints are developing. It mainly screens for Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), where the hip joint may be loose or improperly formed.
Ultrasound is most effective for babies under 6 months of age because their hip joints are mostly cartilage and clearly visible on ultrasound.
After 6 months, X-rays are usually preferred as the bones become more developed.
Doctors recommend a hip scan if your baby has risk factors, commonly called the “5 Fs”:
Female baby
First-born child
Feet-first (breech) delivery
Family history of hip problems or DDH
Flexible ligaments
It may also be advised if the doctor notices uneven thigh folds, leg length differences, or hears a hip “click” during examination.
Not for all babies. It is usually recommended for those with risk factors or abnormal findings during routine newborn or infant check-ups.
No medical preparation is needed. For comfort:
Feed your baby just before the scan
Dress them in loose clothing
Bring a pacifier or favorite toy
This helps keep your baby calm and still.
No. The scan is completely painless and safe. It uses sound waves, not radiation, and does not harm your baby.
The procedure usually takes 20–30 minutes, depending on the baby’s movement and cooperation.
Your baby is placed on their back or side in a soft foam cradle.
A warm, water-based gel is applied, and a handheld probe (transducer) is gently moved over the hip area to capture images.
If DDH or hip instability is detected early, treatment is usually simple and very effective, often involving a brace or harness. Early diagnosis helps avoid surgery later.
Some centers provide results the same day. In most cases, a radiologist reviews the images, and a detailed report is sent to your pediatrician within a few days.
