An NT (Nuchal Translucency) Scan, also known as a Dating Scan, is an important ultrasound performed in the first trimester of pregnancy
What is an NT Scan/Dating Scan?
A woman of any age can give birth to a chromosomally abnormal baby, so an NT scan is suggested routinely to all expecting mothers.
NT or nuchal translucency scan is done between 11 and 13 weeks of gestation. It measures the fluid at the back of the baby’s neck called the nuchal translucency. This helps date the pregnancy accurately and assess the risk for Down syndrome or other chromosomal conditions.
Why is the first-trimester ultrasound performed?
NT scan is a screening ultrasound test where the fluid behind the baby’s neck is measured. If the thickness is more than 2.5mm, then there is a high probability of chromosomal abnormality. We also check the presence of Nasal bone, baby structures, and Doppler in NT scan.
NT scan is only a screening test; results cannot tell you for sure whether the baby has a chromosomal abnormality. If the test shows high-risk results, you may have to undergo further diagnostic procedures like Chorionic villus sampling ( CVS) or Amniocentesis for definitive results.
The NT scan is usually combined with a double-marker blood test for all the expecting mothers. The combination of these two tests can give better risk estimation.
How is it done?
The ultrasound uses soundwaves to create images of the fetus. For most women, we do an abdominal ultrasound where gel is applied to your belly and a wand moves around to get images. In some cases, we may need a transvaginal ultrasound for better views earlier on.
Pre-procedure:
For the belly ultrasound, drink water to fill your bladder which helps us see better. No prep is needed for a vaginal ultrasound. Just wear comfortable clothes.
What happens during the procedure?
The sonologist will move the wand around your belly or insert it vaginally. They capture measurements and photos over about 15-20 minutes to assess baby and check for any issues.
During the scan, the baby’s position is crucial to measure Nasal bone length and fluid thickness. If the position is unfavorable, you will be asked to wait to complete the scan. Schedule your time accordingly.
After the ultrasound?
Your doctor will go over the results with you and your doctor. They’ll explain what we found and what it means for your pregnancy going forward. You’ll schedule your next ultrasound to keep an eye on baby’s development.
When do I get the report?
The sonologist can provide a printout of the photos and key findings within 10-15 minutes after the completion of the scan.
