What is a Scrotum Scan?

Scrotal sonography, also known as a testicular ultrasound, is a safe and non-invasive imaging technique used to evaluate the scrotum and its contents, including the testicles, epididymis, and surrounding structures. When combined with Doppler ultrasound, this scan provides detailed information about blood flow, helping diagnose a variety of conditions affecting male reproductive health.

Why do doctors recommend this Scan?

Scrotal sonography is commonly performed for several reasons:

• Testicular Pain or Swelling: Helps identify the cause of pain or swelling, such as infections (epididymitis, orchitis), testicular torsion, or trauma.
• Lumps or Masses: Assists in the evaluation of scrotal masses, distinguishing between benign conditions like cysts or varicoceles, and more serious concerns like testicular cancer.
• Infertility: Evaluates conditions that might affect fertility, such as varicoceles, which are enlarged veins in the scrotum that can impact sperm production.
• Hydrocele: Identifies the presence of fluid around the testicle, which can cause swelling and discomfort.

What happens during the Scan?

You’ll lie back and the radiologist/sonologist will squirt some gel on your scrotum. They’ll then use a device called a transducer to glide over the skin and create images. This allows the doctor to closely examine your testicles and surrounding tissues.

The scan is painless and gives the doctor a clear look inside to check for any issues that may need addressing. It’s a quick and easy way to properly investigate symptoms and concerns in the scrotal area.
