What is a Sugar Test?

A sugar test, also known as a blood glucose test, is a medical examination used to measure the amount of sugar (glucose) in your blood. It is crucial for diagnosing and managing conditions like diabetes, prediabetes, and hypoglycemia. There are several types of sugar tests, each serving a specific purpose.

Types of Sugar Tests

1. Fasting Blood Glucose Test

   • Purpose: Measures blood sugar after an overnight fast.
   • Procedure: You will be asked to fast for at least 8 hours before the test.
   • Normal Range: Typically, a fasting blood glucose level below 100 mg/dL is considered normal.

2. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)

   • Purpose: Evaluates how your body processes glucose over a period.
   • Procedure: After fasting, you drink a glucose solution, and blood samples are taken at intervals.
   • Normal Range: Blood glucose levels should be below 140 mg/dL two hours after consuming the glucose solution.

3. Hemoglobin A1c Test

   • Purpose: Provides an average blood sugar level over the past 2-3 months.
   • Procedure: A blood sample is taken and analyzed for glycosylated hemoglobin.
   • Normal Range: An A1c level below 5.7% is considered normal

4. Random Blood Glucose Test

   • Purpose: Measures blood sugar without regard to when you last ate.
   • Procedure: A blood sample is taken at any time of the day.
   • Normal Range: Levels above 200 mg/dL may indicate diabetes.
